Why investing might not be right…and what to do when you’ve got too much ‘cash’.

For some people investing isn’t the right thing to do for a variety of reasons…sound familiar?

Perhaps you have got plans for money you’re holding in cash, maybe you are not comfortable accepting investment risk for this capital (there are other risks with holding too much in cash) or the money is simply earmarked as your ’emergency fund’ (something we recommend everyone has).

However there have been a decent number of our private and corporate clients and professional partners who, as part of the work we do with them, have to keep significant amounts of funds in deposit based accounts.

The reality is that often when cash is thought about it is assumed that keeping it in a high street current bank or building society account is the best or only thing to do…even with interest rates on accounts as low as they are currently. This is still risky.

However our experience shows that we can assist anyone whom has large amounts of cash held on deposit to significantly improve the returns they get (often by a decent amount in ‘monetary terms’) and also be safe in the knowledge that their money is fully FSCS protected. This includes private individuals, corporates, trusts, charities and power of attorneys.

Now it’s worth pointing out that interest rates on deposit based accounts are and have been very low for a significant amount of time. To maintain the real value of money over the long term it is worth auditing your current position and having a conversation with us about how you feel about risk.

However if you’ve got entirely valid reasons for keeping money in deposit based savings accounts you owe it to yourself (or if you look after money for others…to your clients) to ensure you’re getting the best return for your money.

By adopting Sir David Brailsford’s concept of the doctrine of marginal gains small incremental improvements in any process add up to a significant improvement when they are all added together. Try starting with a review of your deposit based savings as a simple improvement to address.

Trustee responsibility dictates that you also have to review money held on deposit if simply to reaffirm that no changes are required.
