Why one employee sees employee benefits as integral to their business and why you should too…
Over the last few years we’ve helped many employers set up and run their workplace pension schemes. Whilst the majority of this work has been due to the fact that these employers have automatic enrolment obligations we are seeing more and more businesses put benefits in place for their workforce for other reasons.
Recently we engaged with a small technology business.
They were based in an innovation hub, situated near a university and surrounded by businesses of a similar type, size and reliance on intellectual capital to make their business a success.
They employed 38 individuals and when we started working with the firm I met with the managing director. I started by talking about their obligations and he stopped me in my tracks…
“Chris” he said “I understand we need to comply with automatic enrolment regulation….but that’s not my priority”
“Okay” I replied “Help me understand what is…”
That’s when he told me…
“Our greatest assets as a business is our people. Their knowledge, experience and input help us create all our value. The competition for the individuals we need to recruit to continuously improve our business is high…you might have noticed when you came in that there were 20 + similar businesses in our building alone who we’re competing with for the best people as well as the thousands of other employers where the intellectual capital of their people underpin their business, including many large employers.”
I nodded and he continued
“We want to ensure that we deliver an employment package which includes an attractive salary and a fantastic working culture but also a leading benefits package so that we keep, retain and recruit the best people.”
It’s interesting…
Whilst there are businesses which are only concerned with meeting their minimum obligations under the law we are speaking and consulting with a decent number of smaller employers who understand the need to do more.
The need to ensure that in addition to a fantastic working culture and competitive salaries there are decent employee benefits.
The need to help employees understand the value of these benefits
and
The need to provide benefits which not only comply by law but also are valued by their employees.
After all, if you run a business is in an industry or profession which relies on it’s people it’s fundamentally important to ensure you fight hard to retain, recruit and reward your best people.
