Collective nouns, Ingrates and why I spent Monday at the farm and not in the office

Last Monday instead of heading into the office I spent my day shepherding six 5 year olds around the farm.

Now whilst I don’t spend every Monday morning wandering around the farm with a gaggle of children (not the correct collective noun by the way….the correct collective noun is actually an ‘ingratitude of children‘- which seems weird…but true)

One of this ‘gaggle’ (or if you’re using the actual collective noun I suppose you’d call them Ingrates) was my youngest Daughter Sophie and I was volunteering at her school as a parent helper for the day.

Now I could have been in the office. There’s always more than enough work to be done, especially as we continue to grow as a business.

However the reality is that the most important job in my life is as a Dad. It informs everything I do, including how I run my business, how I try to live the values I try to teach my children and how I spend my time…

Which is why I felt it was more important to spend the day with my daughter and her friends at the farm and catch up with work later.

The day at the farm was great fun with the kids asking a hundred questions and having a thousand things to say. We fed animals, played games and at times got over excited (although that was me more than the six year olds). We fed a ferret.

However it was a strangely tiring experience too and I came home thinking I’d be less exhausted if I’d spent the day in the office.

I’ve got a new found respect for primary teachers. I can imagine teaching is massively emotionally rewarding and enjoyable but I’m under no illusions that teaching younger children takes both skill, patience and discipline.

So, the question is…would I do it again? The answer is absolutely yes!

I believe that life is about creating memories and whilst neither Sophie or I might not remember our day out in the farm in years to come I’m glad we spent it together and instead of being an ingrate, I instead feel massively grateful for the opportunity to get involved.

You see whilst Money certainly helps having freedom of time either to enjoy or spending quality time with the people you love is way more important (something we often talk to our clients about)…which is why in the battle between a day in the office or a day in the farm with my daughter there was no competition.

What do you think?
