Digging wells, Fraggle Rock and why achieving financial independence is more pertinent

Hundreds and maybe thousands of years ago before Netflix and the internet and even Fraggle Rock there was a time when instead of being reliant on modern plumbing access to fresh water was less abundant.

Instead of simply turning the tap you had to dig a well to get access to water. Now whilst I don’t profess to be a well digging expert it’s clear that digging a well takes work and doesn’t yield instant results. A quick google search reveals that even today to dig a well and to use it can take between 1 to 2 days with the help of modern digging equipment and I’m assuming this may have taken a bit longer the further you go back in time.

This is why the Chinese proverb ‘Dig the well before you’re thirsty’ makes so much sense….to plan and prepare for the production of water if cultivating your source of water was going to take some time makes a lot of sense.

How about when we’re thinking about our financial futures? Do we start to plan for our financial futures early enough? and even when we intend to enter the next stage of our careers or lives do we plan enough in advance to ensure that we’re ready to start making decisions?

What I’m asking is simple…

Are you ‘digging your financial well’ (planning and preparing for the future) before you’re ‘Thirsty’ (achieve financial independence, whatever that looks like for you, so you can spend your time more effectively?)

The reality is that whilst plans aren’t a bulletproof way of things running smoothly it’s a sure fire way to ensure that you’re taking steps in the right direction designed to help you achieve your goal, regardless of whether that goal is digging a well (unlikely in 2019) or wanting to achieve financial security whatever that looks like for you (certainly a more likely aspiration than digging a well in 2019)

Now at Cervello that’s what we spend our days doing. Supporting people to build a plan to achieve financial independence and security. So, if you need help doing that we can certainly talk to you about how working with us will help you do this…

….however if you’re looking to build a well it’s probably not worth calling us…we’re rubbish at that!
