The one book I read every day

One of the habits I’ve adopted in 2022 is to read one page of the same book every day for the entire year.

That book is The Daily Stoic by Ryan Holiday.

There’s two things I really enjoy about reading this book.

First it’s the practice of simply reading one page a day and contemplating that particular page. My typically book reading style be it a work of fiction or fact is to rocket as quickly as possible through the book. The challenge with this approach is you don’t often take in as much as you do when you adopt a more deliberate methodical way to read.

It was difficult at first as my tendency is to flip the page and carry on reading however I’ve now managed to make sure that I follow the rules and I’m only reading the page designed for the day. By keeping to the rules of the game I’m finding that I’m more thoughtful about what’s written and how it applies to my life.

The book is effectively a description of the principals behind stoic philosophy and each day explains a different life lesson from the stoics together with a description of how this might apply in our lives today and cover off a wide range of subjects including happiness, wellbeing, resilience, doing good in the world and much more.

I’ve found that reading just one page of stoic philosophy in the morning before I leave to work provides me with an opportunity to reflect on what I’d like my day to be and take positive action to make that day as aligned to my values as possible.

I’d certainly recommend the Daily Stoic to anyone….it’s provided me with a lot of food for thought and certainly the daily process of reading the same book has been useful (although I’m still trying to duplicate the style of one page a day and slowing down how I read most books)

The benefit of this book in my experience is it is a constant reminder of some important life lessons we knew two thousand years ago which we can practically use in our lives today and I’ve certainly benefitted from one page each day from the daily stoic has certainly made an impact on our lives.

As an avid reader I’m always looking for books to read (and share) which will help and support me and my clients…and if have read or intend to read The Daily Stoic I’d love to hear your thoughts.

So what are you reading at the moment? Have you read the daily stoic? And what book have you most enjoyed (or found interesting) recently?
