What is a lifetime ISA and what can I use it for?
When thinking about your financial plan, one option to consider is a Lifetime ISA (Individual Savings Account).
Now, there are rules around who can benefit from a Lifetime ISA but my experience tells me that even if you don’t qualify for a Lifetime ISA, you’ll know someone who might benefit. For example, whilst you might be over the age restrictions, a lot of my clients benefit from knowing about Lifetime ISA allowances for their kids…
So in this blog post, we’ll explore what a Lifetime ISA is, how it works, and what you can use it for.
A Lifetime ISA is a savings account that was introduced by the UK government in 2017 to encourage savings for two specific purposes: buying a first home and saving for retirement.
If you’re between the ages of 18 and 40, you can open a Lifetime ISA and save up to £4,000 each year until you turn 50.
For every £4 you put in, the government will add an extra £1, up to a maximum of £1,000 per year. This means that if you were to contribute the maximum of £4,000 per year from age 18 to 50, you could potentially receive a government bonus of up to £32,000.
While a Lifetime ISA is primarily designed to help people save for a first home or retirement, there are additional uses for the account.
You can withdraw money from your Lifetime ISA penalty-free if you’re using it to purchase a property worth up to £450,000.
You’re also allowed to withdraw money penalty-free after age 60 and while you can technically withdraw money before age 60 for reasons other than a first home or retirement, doing so will result in a withdrawal fee of 25% of the amount withdrawn.
It’s important to explore all of your options when it comes to saving and investing your money but, even if you don’t qualify for a Lifetime ISA, make sure the people you love know of the options available to effectively and efficiently save and invest.
The Lifetime ISA is one such option that can help you save for a first home, retirement, or other long-term goals. By taking advantage of the government bonus and tax-free savings offered by a Lifetime ISA, you can make you (or your loved ones!) money work harder for you and help secure a brighter financial future.
