What can 80’s TV teach us about building a robust financial plan?

I’m probably biased, being born in the late 70’s but loving kids TV in the 80’s but I believe the 1980s marked a golden era for television, with iconic shows that left a lasting impact on pop culture.

These shows not only entertained us but also contained valuable lessons that can be applied to different aspects of life, including financial planning.

In this blog, we will explore how 80s TV can teach us about building a robust financial plan, with references to beloved shows from that era. Let’s take a nostalgic journey and uncover the financial wisdom hidden within 80s television.

The Power of Teamwork – The A-Team:

“The A-Team” showcased the power of collaboration and teamwork. Hannibal, Face, B.A. Baracus, and Murdock came together to overcome challenges.

My recommendation if you’re thinking about building your financial plan is to build your A Team. This might include an accountant, a lawyer or a business valuation specialist but should certainly include a holistic financial planner to bring it all together.

Resourcefulness and Creativity – MacGyver:

“MacGyver” demonstrated the resourcefulness and creativity of the main character, who solved problems using unconventional means.

We now live in unconventional times with the old life model of “Learn / Work / Retire” being rejected by a decent amount of us. So, let’s nurture our inner MacGyvers and think about how we might creatively want to live in a way that means we can be more happy more often and improves our overall longer term wellbeing.

Resilience and Adaptability – The Golden Girls:

“The Golden Girls” portrayed resilience and adaptability as the main characters faced various challenges.

Financial planning requires resilience to withstand unexpected circumstances and adaptability to adjust your plan when necessary. Like the Golden Girls, embracing change and maintaining a positive mindset can lead to a more robust financial future.

80s TV shows not only entertained us but also provided (a couple of) valuable lessons that can be applied to financial planning.

From the power of teamwork and resourcefulness to resilience and the importance of  financial independence these shows offer insights that can strengthen our financial plans.
