As you know if you’ve read any amount of my writing before, you’ll know that I’m a fan of philosophical quotes.

Whilst my personal favourite quotes tend to come from the ancient Greek and Roman philosophers, there’s plenty of Wisdom shared by the ancient Eastern philosophers and philosophies.

One of the stand out quotes, from author of ‘the art of war’ Sun Tzu who said the following:-

Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory.

Tactics without Strategy is the noise before defeat.

Now, you may be wondering why this might apply to you (or me!) in 2024, particularly when it comes to your financial plan…but it absolutely does!

You see, you can have the most amazing financial plan in place…but without taking the right action towards this goal you’re in a position where achieving this goal will take you a lot longer.

Not taking the right action from a tax and investment perspective to suit what you want to achieve can and will mean that achieving your financial goals will take longer.

However, I’d argue that not having clarity on what you want to achieve with your financial plan is worse!

I always like to understand, when I’m working with a client, the answer to one question…

“How much is Enough?”

The reality is that financial independence, knowing you’ve got enough money so you’ve got autonomy and freedom of time, is an important step towards building an important financial strategy.

“Enough” financially looks different to all of us, and like all plans can change over time, but having a starting point allows you to take the right action over the right time in order to achieve your goal.

As Sun Tzu said Tactics (taking action) without strategy (having a clear plan) is the ‘noise before defeat’.
