Hitchhikers, Paranoid Androids and why “Don’t panic” is an important pension freedom message

For many a man in a dressing gown, annoying aliens and the number 42 may not sound like the key components of a really good piece of writing.

However with the help of the skilled penmanship of Mr Douglas Adams these three ideas (along with many more) were brought together to create one of the funniest series of books (and radio shows and TV adaptations) of all time. The series in question…

The hitchhikers guide to the galaxy.

Whilst I appreciate that whilst I consider the ‘hitchhikers guide’ may be one of the best pieces of comedy sci fi writing of all time I appreciate that some of the concepts, although I find them really funny, might not be the sort of thing which tickles you.

However, and maybe it’s just my strange sense of humour, but paranoid androids, Earth emigrating dolphins and Earth being demolished to make space for a super space highway just amuse me more than is probably healthy!

Now the series is named after a book.

A book to help galactic drifters travel the universe with ease.

A book which contains all the information you need to be a traveler of space.

A book with just two words on it’s cover….

“Don’t Panic”

Now maybe it’s just the way my mind makes connections between seemingly unrelated topics but the self same words seem to apply quite aptly to an impending event…

The day, which is nearly here, where individuals have more freedom on what they can do with their pension pots.

However whilst the day on which you’ll have more freedom with your pension pots is coming soon there’s one aspect of the reforms which is worth highlighting…

Whilst it’s important to start to think about and plan for how these changes will impact you it’s equally important to ensure you take your time in ensuring you make the right decisions.

Whilst the new pension reforms come into play on the 6th April 2015 it’s important to remember that this isn’t a deadline.

So, instead of feeling massive urgency to make choices, and as the front of the ‘hitchhikers guide to the galaxy’ recommends…

Don’t panic!

Instead if you’ve decided to work with an adviser take some time to find an adviser you can work with over the long term, and as mentioned in this article, find someone with your best interests at heart and be careful of the scammers.

Alternatively if you’ve decided to make your own decisions without professional support ensure you take your time to ensure you understand all the options open and available to you. Pension wise (the government website recently set up to inform people of some of the options available might be a good place to start).

However it’s also important to understand how the changes might impact you, and whilst there may be other reasons you need to take financial action before the end of the tax year, when it comes to the new pension reforms ensure you take enough time to understand how the new rules apply to you.

I reckon when it comes to the new rules, 3 things are key…

Don’t rush

Don’t do anything without taking the time to either fully understand how the new regulations impact you or seeking support and advice from a qualified professional.

and most of all…

Don’t Panic!
