I was on the tube traveling early on this cold January morning when I noticed this article on the BBC website.

The article’s message is clear…

Nearly half of small and micro businesses are confused about their automatic enrolment responsibilities.

This statistic didn’t surprise me….

We spend a decent amount of our days, both through the work we do through AE in a Box and via Cervello (our consultancy business) helping employers understand how automatic enrolment impacts them and guiding them through the process.

The survey (which was conducted by the federation of small business) is clear…

Small businesses need (and often) want help to ensure they comply with automatic enrolment regulation.

You see with nearly half of small and micro businesses admitting they’re confused about automatic enrolment I find myself wondering about whether this tells the full story about how prepared these businesses are…

I wonder how many more business owners are confused but don’t feel comfortable enough admitting it?

I wonder how many more assume they know the rules but actually misunderstand key part of the legislation?

I wonder how many employers are unaware of the rules….or are aware of the rules and assume it doesn’t apply to them?

Regardless of the answers to the questions above one thing is clear…

Over the next few years hundreds of thousands of employers who admit to be confused could do with help through the process of automatic enrolment compliance…

and

This percentage of employers who would benefit from help, when all other factors are taken into account, could be far greater…
