Why at Cervello we’re glad that spreadsheet Phil seems to be a business as usual chancellor
Change can be exciting but sometimes, just sometimes, we just need a little bit of stability in our lives.
Whilst the previous chancellor liked making big announcements which often meant pretty fundamental change to both the pension and tax rules, and subsequently many of our clients financial plans, this chancellor seems to be taking the slow and steady approach.
You see whilst the budget had some interesting announcements for first time buyers and potentially beneficial stamp duty savings much of the budget was more ‘business as usual’ and less ‘viva the economic revolution’.
There were the usual increases in the annual allowance and the taxes on booze, fuel and cigarettes as well as some interesting announcements on the size of the Brexit war chest as well as some less ambitious growth assumptions on the UK economy.
However despite much of the speculation Mr Hammond decided not to make fundamental changes to either pensions or the VAT threshold.
At Cervello our immediate reaction is we’re pretty satisfied with ‘business as usual’ at this point and the fact that the next planned budget is Twelve not Six months away as having a degree of stability helps us plan more effectively.
However it’s also worth remembering that a ‘week is a long time in politics’ and we’ll be keeping an eye on potential political change which might have an impact on you and your money.
